Sometimes life surprises you when you least expect it.
You can go through years of routines, responsibilities, ministry, work, and everyday living, believing you already know the kind of people you will meet and connect with. Then one day, someone walks into your life who is completely different from you on the outside, yet strangely familiar on the inside.
Recently, I met a woman who reminded me of something important about relationships and human connection. She is tall, blonde-haired, white, health-conscious, and passionate about walking, photography, writing, healthy living, and keeping life organized and clean. On paper, we may appear to come from two very different worlds. I am an African-American pastor, teacher, media producer, and ministry leader with a life deeply rooted in faith, community, creativity, and helping people grow.
Yet as we talked, I realized something powerful: meaningful connections are not built merely on appearances, age, ethnicity, or background. They are built on spirit, values, interests, purpose, and mutual respect.
Too many people miss beautiful possibilities in life because they only look for people who mirror them outwardly. But God often works through contrast. Sometimes He sends people into our lives who stretch our thinking, expand our experiences, and help us see life through a fresh lens.
One of the things I appreciated most was discovering common ground. We both appreciate healthy living. We both value creativity. We both enjoy photography and writing. We both understand the importance of taking care of ourselves mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Those shared interests became bridges between two people who otherwise may never have crossed paths.
Relationships—whether friendships, partnerships, ministry connections, or something deeper—often begin with simple conversations. A shared smile. A common interest. A moment of curiosity. The willingness to listen instead of judge.
The older I get, the more I realize that life is not about putting people into boxes. It is about discovering the uniqueness God placed inside each individual.
You never know what can grow from meeting someone new.
Maybe it becomes a friendship that encourages you.
Maybe it becomes creative inspiration.
Maybe it becomes companionship.
Maybe it becomes a lesson.
Maybe it becomes healing.
Maybe it simply reminds you that your life is not over and your future is still unfolding.
One thing is certain: every meaningful relationship begins with openness.
We live in a world that constantly tries to divide people by race, politics, age, culture, or social status. But real connection happens when two people are willing to see beyond labels and recognize character, kindness, intelligence, passion, and purpose.
Sometimes the people who bless your life the most are the ones you never expected to meet.
I believe God allows certain people to cross our paths for a reason. Not every connection is meant to last forever, but every connection has the potential to teach us something valuable about ourselves, about others, and about life.
So do not close your heart because someone is different from you.
Do not miss your blessing because it arrives in an unexpected package.
Do not assume that compatibility only comes wrapped in familiarity.
Some of the best conversations, friendships, and life experiences begin when we simply say hello to someone new.
And perhaps one of the greatest joys in life is discovering that even in our differences, we may have far more in common than we ever imagined.
